- 3 dark roast scoops (~42gr)
- Pour ~200ml water at 180°F slowly
- stir 10s and wait for 30s
- Quick stir and flip.
- Press slowly.
- Add 300ml water and serve.
This makes 3 strong cups of 1/12 ratio.

But the country had three problems: high dependence on a single commodity (oil), high levels of inequality and an increasingly corrupt and unresponsive elitist political system. Other than that, Venezuela was the most successful Latin American democracy.
Today, as a professor, I teach my students that Chile is the most successful Latin American democracy, but the country has three problems: high dependence on copper, high levels of inequality and an increasingly unresponsive and corrupt political system.
And this is a good reminder for the next Venezuela – I hope:
The Chilean elites would benefit from learning the lessons from the devastating experience of Venezuela since the early 1990s. Unless the benefits of economic growth — the promised land — are more justly distributed, the promised land will turn into hell for everyone.
Every day I tell any tico that would listen to me that while they do have problems, all Latin American countries would give anything to exchange their problems to those of Costa Rica and Chile. I still stand by it, but this article reminds me you can’t fall into complacency.

In 2003 I visited my first Apple Store, in Cambridge, MA. I was beyond excited. Little did I know that 4 years later I’d buy the first iPhone on the same store.
A few seconds before this photo, Bettina grabbed my face, turned it on the side, and planted a big kiss on my cheek. This is what happiness filled with a melted heart looks like.
Yesterday we celebrated Ana’s birthday. My better half has given me two better wholes – each as beautiful and intense as their mom. Which makes the amount of love and effort she gives all of us quite literally infinite. We love you.

Tracking Expenses (Part 1)
For 2019 we’re trying to have better controls of our expenses at home. After trying a few Apps, we settled on Next on the iPhone. It does an amazing job at expense input, and a adequate one at reporting.
After 1 month even Ana is enjoying the habit – or at least tolerating it. But the next step is some sort of conciliation, where we hopefully give it better name, and have some alcohol while doing it.
Just getting started, but Thinking in Bets by Annie Duke has me glued to the first chapter. A few more insights like the difference before decision & result – and it may be my favorite non fiction of the year.

I’m struggling deciding how and where to microblog. Which is kind of stupid since I’d already setup everything on blot last year. But micro.blog makes everything so simple and easy to post (specially photos), that it’s difficult to switch back.
Naming also has me confused. Having the microblog at roberto.mateu.me sounds logical, but I just enjoy the 5typos.net domain for some reason.
There’s two advantages micro.blog has over my regular blog: 1. Ease of posting 2. It’s a community
The ease of posting is relative but real. I can achieve everything the native client offers with different apps and workflows – but then again, micro.blog just does it with the app. And the cross posting is extremely well thought out.
The community part is more complicated. A blogpost is mostly lost in the void of RSS readers and occasional visitors to the site. But there’s no real equivalent of a community. Also, is it really the community? Or is it the sensation of being read a reply in micro.blog gives you? versus the absolute silence of the stand alone blog.
Anyways, posting on the blog has stopped because a leaving Miami draft I’ve had since January. Pushing that one out tomorrow one way or another.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens: About 90 min from our house in Escazú. As with most Costa Rica touristy locations, tickets are expensive but it’s very well setup. Fun day trip with the kids, although I wouldn’t recommend eating there – not sure if it was because of a holiday, but the food was not good. Otherwise, recommended.
Current cold brew coffee recipe:
- 1.5 cups of coarse dark roast
- Slowly pour regular water until you fill French press (32oz) and wait 10 min.
- Give it a good whirl and cover.
- Wait 24 hours (not on fridge).
Then press and pass through a wet coffee filter.
Thought I was ser for life with my Goruck GR1 backpack and my Waterfield Bolt Briefcase… but they had to come up with a Bolt Backpack. Looks great.

I’ve just spend a month traveling. It was basically a combination of fortunate smaller trips that together made a great one:
San Juan (Puerto Rico)
An island full of flavor. With a duality incorporated to every aspect of life: latins in a anglo-saxon context. Business potential that could be the beginning of something or the end of something even bigger. I’ll be back.
Miami/Boca Raton
Friends that are family and real family you see less than friends. Things have changed but the love remains the same. When you have no answers you might as well listen and learn. Hope I was quiet enough.
Boston/Gloucester:
Amazing how good memories can still make you sad. Still, great friend from different places. Best wedding speech I’ve ever heard —including movies—, thanks Jake.
Istanbul/Göcek/Athens:
Borrowed life, might as well enjoy it. Get some friends together and postpone all problems, what can go wrong? Exactly. Don’t forget reality, but leave it behind on this trip. Look around and just smile, it very rarely happens this easily.
London/Paris:
The meaning of family. Brady Bunch and Flounders combined on a happyfest. Blame globalization or politics, we where not designed for distance relationships. Europe reminds me of many things I miss, but also of a loneliness I don’t.

This week I got my new personal business cards. I went with COLOURLovers, This Is Not A Rainbow ready-mades from Moo.com.
I had two objectives:
- Cards needed to be ready in a week.
- The couldn’t look like they came from Staples.
Since the last time I designed my own business cards it took me about a week to have the design ready, I just choose the most colorful/conversation starting design I found.
Very happy with the results,for $22 (50 cards), I think they would do just fine.

A Month in the US of A
Jumping over the Atlantic
It been about a month since I arrived in the US after leaving Norway.
The first week in Boston with my family was a welcomed vacation. The days leading to it where tiring mentally and emotionally and the safety of being with my parents and sister was uplifting.
Boston sans University
Boston holds a special place in my heart. My two years there where really amazing, and most corners have a fun memory attached to it. This was my first time after three visits that nostalgia didn’t get the best of me. I just looked back and smiled.
I like nostalgia. It’s usually is the result of a extremely happy memory that is not easily replicated. It does hurt a bit, but in a good way.
Grunge and Starbucks
After Boston it was off to Seattle, where the most concrete part of my almost non-existent current plan lies. The results won’t be seen for some time, but the trip was still worth it. It reminded me lots of Austin -with its yuppie feeling- and any city with such a great science fiction museum1 gets my eternal love.
I finished reading Enders Game on top of the Space Needle, this is something I will never forget for some reason.While I don’t know the significance, someday I hope to find out (or make it up).
Train South
Since I was already on the West coast, and I still had the adventureness feeling that Wolf and Nav radiate, I decided not to fly straight to Miami and take a train to San Francisco.
The Coast Starlight boast a scenic route all the way down to Los Angeles. The views are pretty, and the train itself is not half-bad, but what it lacks in speed and amenities compared to any European train, it makes up for in the friendliness of almost every passenger.
I got to met some interesting people along the way, among them: a surfer dude on his way to pick up all his stuff to move back to Portland and help his mom, and older guy who reads Greek novels and visited Caracas 30 years ago, or a sad looking girl that really doesn’t seem to want the train to stop ever, but has a lot of Kindle questions.
I don’t know if I never tried hard enough in Norway, or if I was in a very touristy train ride, but I never experienced this easy friendliness back there.
The City, for a Day
Afterwards, San Francisco was as inviting as ever. A city that looks you in the eye and tells you:
>“I know you don’t want to be a tourist; stay a while longer”.
But isn’t the right time yet, or so I hope.

While people in Oslo seemed to be fit so they could enjoy life, here it seems that fitness is a byproduct of trying to be beautiful.

Loved this film. It’s typical a Wes Anderson movie done in animated stop-motion. If you like his style, then you are in for a great time.
I loved the whole feel of the movie, and the way Anderson makes you love flawed characters. As most of his films, there is no universal measure of good or bad, no real heroes or villians, just life, with people (and animals) experiencing it.
Highly recommended.

Over the past two years, my use of Facebook has dropped consistently. To the point that I only use it as an event reminder, since it’s where most people post birthdays, parties, etc.
At the same time, I have been blogging, more or less consistently, on 5typos.net. I really enjoy it, although none of the posts are great, it feels good to create content.
